GLP-1 analogs, drugs initially designed for diabetes treatment, may hold the key to groundbreaking addiction treatment methods. Originally marketed in 2005 for diabetes and more recently approved by the FDA for weight loss, these medications have shown unexpected effects on reducing addiction to substances such as nicotine and alcohol. Multiple phase 2 clinical trials are currently investigating the potent compound semaglutide and its chemical relatives for their efficacy in curbing various addictions, including to alcohol, opioids, cigarettes, and cocaine.
